Huge Roman Gold pendant decorated with Nymph and Satyr. Circa 2nd century AD. Ex private London collection, purchased before 1950. Most likely southern Italy.
It is hard to describe just how large and stunning this pendant is. It will surely make an impact if worn today as it did 2,000 years ago. Suspension hoop is intact so it is perfectly wearable.
Depicted on this pendant is the Satyr on the left, in Roman mythology this was The Faun (Romans illustrated it as half man and half goat) from the head to the waist being the human half, but with the addition of goat horns manifestation of forest and animal spirits which would help or hinder humans at whim. Romans believed fauns inspired fear in men traveling in lonely, remote or wild places.
The Nymph is in the centre. There are 5 different types of nymphs, Celestial Nymphs, Sea Nymphs, Land Nymphs, Wood Nymphs and Underworld Nymphs. Different from goddesses, nymphs are generally regarded as divine spirits who animate nature, and are usually depicted as beautiful, young nubile maidens who love to dance and sing.
A winged male form and heron type bird complete the picture.
Measures a huge 5.9 cm in total height and weighs an amazing 21.83 grams!!
