Roman ring. Bronze with Roman God Mercury engraved on bezel. circa 1st to 4th Century AD. From Eastern Europe.
The Romans would try to curry favour with the Gods in any way they could. To wear a ring like this with such a fine engraving would have had very powerful apotropaic undertones. Mercury was the son of Jupiter (King of the Gods). He was fast on his feet and very clever so Jupiter decided he would make a wonderful messenger.
