A Nice Example!!! This ring was found at a Roman site in Ancient Thracia and dates from 400 - 700 AD. It gives us a nice motif of an early Byzantine-Christian Cross. The design on the framed, oval bezel is of a cross that has widened, curved ends.

Once Christianity became a legitimate religion in the Roman Empire, there was a rush to accommodate the new faith and to make items whose owners could "advertise" that they were adherents of this new religion.

There are also some SPECTACULAR shoulder decorations on this ring. LOOK!........at BOTH shoulders. Each shoulder has a motif which were done in a raised relief. The well sculpted decorations look like floral acanthus flowers. The designs are now slightly worn but still give us an idea of their former glory. This ring is a descendant of the early Roman "fertility" rings which had a plant motif on the bezel where the cross is located on this ring. This is a nicely executed and noticeable Cross. This design was done expertly and is nicely framed by a nice bezel outline.

We believe that this design was done on a much older ring which is most probably from the Roman Era, because of the bezel shape. It's original Pagan design was replaced with a more desirable Christian motif.
